Sugar. Ugh. It's the best, but it's also the worst. It tastes great and we all love it, but eat too much and we become slaves to the cravings and that amazing sugar "high." It also negatively effects the way we feel, how much energy we have, the quality of our sleep, our hormone responses and the ability to maintain a healthy weight. Wow, thanks a lot sugar. And, of course, the hardest part about loving it how hard it is to give it up. The feeling we get when we eat sugar is the same feeling we get when we are really happy or in love. No wonder we are all addicted. Now, I fully and openly admit to being a sugar addict.
"Hi. I'm Leigh. I'm addicted to sugar..."
While my cravings for sugar have subsided since going paleo 2 years ago, I still have times when I overindulge in a paleo treat and find myself wanting more. More honey. More maple syrup. More coconut sugar. More dried fruit. Until, boom, I'm addicted again. Now, some of you may be thinking, "but I thought honey was good for you. It's not like you are addicted to candy bars and a little honey never hurt anyone." True, raw honey is one of the best natural sweeteners out there and yes, I don't really eat refined sugars. But, if you are like me, a little bit of honey over time can lead to a lot of other sweets and that opens the door for blood sugar dysregulation and hormonal imbalances, both of which I personally struggle with.
That is why I am starting my journey to sugar craving freedom today with help from the 21 Day Sugar Detox by Diane Sanfilippo. This is a 21 day program designed to help you eliminate your sugar and carb cravings through the use of a whole foods diet. There are several levels of the program and it includes modifications for athletes, pregnant or nursing women, and pescaterians. You do not need to be low carb or even "perfectly paleo" to do this program and that is one of the best parts about it! She is seriously amazing for writing this book and has a really great online program that can help you kick start your health and drop those nasty sugar cravings. It's not your fault you are addicted, it's your brain that is addicted to the rewarding feeling when you eat sugar. Diane breaks down all of the science into easy to understand sections and gives you the information you need to take control of your addictions. I highly recommend this program and you can find it available here!
Join me here on the blog as I begin my journey this month. I will be posting weekly recaps on my progress as well as some easy recipes that anyone can make. Yeah, February may not be the easiest time of year to do it, but it is definitely the best time to conquer those cravings. Valentine's Day has always been a favorite of mine because, well, chocolate. But I haven't had candy on Valentine's Day in about three years because of all the added soy and dairy, so I think I can handle it and I think you can, too! Let's do this together.
